  • Step 1: We begin at Gate A of Spinney Hill Park on St Saviour’s Road. Tap the icon in the bottom left of your screen to switch between map and text.

  • Step 2: In the 1880s, Arthur Wakerley, a local architect, had a vision to create a ‘model village‘ here. At that time this area was called North Evington but we now know it as Spinney Hills.

  • Step 3: This model village was to contain good houses with factories in between them. Let’s explore some of Wakerley’s factories as well as some built by others

  • Step 5: Leave the park and turn right onto St Saviour’s Road. Carefully cross the road and then take a left onto Asfordby Street. Continue along Asfordby Street

  • Step 6: On the corner of Atkinson Street is The Islamic Establishment shop. This building used to be the Anchor Boot Works. This factory was built by Arthur Wakerley and leased to Anchor in the late 1800s.
